The militarization of responses to COVID-19 in Democratic Latin America

Abstract Latin America has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting its governments to take action. In this context, countries within have used their armed forces for an array of tasks serve citizens. But how militarized is response in America? This paper proposes a typology provided as COVID-19. The descriptive findings allow us map these tasks, attributing scores fourteen American democracies. We also show evidence potential consequences some tasks. Policing streets enforce stay-at-home orders may lead military committing human rights violations, assuming eminently civilian posts manage public health crisis can result long term implications civil-military balance that are detrimental democratic control over military.
